'If You Don't Know Where Your Going'

Another brick has been placed in the wall. For many of us, whether we are baby boomers, busters, or generation X'ers, the death of George Harrison was another sign post on times highway.

It hardly seems possible thirty years have passed since The Beatles broke up, and twenty-one years ago this week, John Lennon was murdered.

There have been a number of stories looking back at Harrison's life and his influence. Cable channel VH1, chronicled his last interview and performance given in 1997.

They replayed it dozens of times, and I found myself watching and listening over and over. Harrison was a very private man, resisting the spotlight, to look for a deeper meaning to life.

I had not seen him on television for years. He spoke of the spiritual journey he had spent most of his adult life on.

The more I listened, the more I realized here was someone who had figured out what man's journey was about. He spoke of finding God, and seeing how deep his relationship with him could become. He talked about this life just being the beginning. He knew that on the other side there was the key.

Then, the interviewer asked him to play a song. As it would happen, a lady that had come into the studio with Harrison had brought a guitar. He sat for a minute strumming, trying to think of a song to play.
He could have chosen "My Sweet Lord", "Here Comes The Sun", or "Something", or any number of great songs.

Instead he chose the moment to teach.
"If You Don't Know Where Your Going, Any Road Will Take You There" was the song he played. It talked of the importance of figuring out why God had put me here, and making sure, that I was on the road that led to heaven.
The line that was the most poignient was this one;
"Well my life's coming around the bend,
it has no sides,
it has no ends.....
But, if you don't know where your going,
any road will take you there.....

That song had never been recorded. It was his final performance. He knew life was winding down. He knew too, that people were watching, and listening.
How would he face the end of the line?
Just this year he started a new publishing company. RIP:2001 was its name. He still had a sense of humor, and perspective.
He died quietly, with his family, teaching until his death.
He talked of the importance of loving one another. He said too, that he had appointment to keep with God. So he did. We all do.
Last week, I felt as though the reality of that appointment got a little bit closer.

"What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes." James 4:14
